Barcelona,
the city born two thousand years ago on the shores of the Mediterranean,
is today Europes most popular destination for corporate events
and conferences.
This beautiful city has developed into a great metropolis since
its foundation by the Carthaginians more than two thousand years
ago. An open port on the Gulf of Lions, it has received Romans,
Arabs and Christians, all of whom left their mark enriching the
cities architecture and culture. Its impressive Gothic Quarter,
built in part over the old Roman walls, bears witness to this.
Barcelona, is also famous for its cultural identity. It is known
as the city of Gaudí, the 19th century world famous architect
whose radical style of building is literally unique. The Sagrada
Familia church, the Pedrera and Güell Park are all architectural
treasures. Antonio Gaudí executed most of his works in the
city of Barcelona, where he courageously explored a variety of building
types and shapes, without the scope of his vision ever being restricted
by site and epoch limitations - around every corner in Barcelona
you will find an architectural piece of art.
The Olympic Games produced a vast improvement in the citys
infrastructure and services. No other European capital has undergone
such an important transformation in recent years. There are new
hotels, restaurants and shops to cater for the vast increase in
tourism as well as beautiful squares and parks with impressive sculptures
by Chillida, Serra, Oldenburg, Lichtenstein and Hunt Kelly.
Just a short drive from the city centre you will find sandy beaches
and picturesque mountain ranges offering a wide variety of watersports
and outdoor activities.
Barcelona also offers an endless selection of unusual banqueting
venues such as Royal Palaces, Ancient Castles, Gothic Churches,
Opera Houses, Stately Homes and Wine Cellars, providing the perfect
setting for any special evening.
Communication
The 1992 Olympic Games provided for the expansion and
refurbishment of Barcelona's El Prat Airport which handles hundreds
of international flights a week from all over the world. Road, rail
and sea links are also excellent.
In the near future the high-speed train (AVE), will connect Barcelona
to Madrid.
